A few minutes of checking ahead can help you avoid surprise bills later.

Check before you go

Before you see a doctor, get a test, or fill a prescription, ask these questions:

Is this doctor in my insurance network?
Do I need a referral?
Do I need approval from insurance first?
How much will this cost me?

Try to stay in-network

Insurance pays more for in-network care. Going out-of-network can cost you much more.

Confirm the doctor or facility is in my network before my visit
Check that the lab, specialist, or doctor is also in-network — not just the hospital
Ask and double-check — it is always okay to do so

Keep a simple record

A notebook, folder, or notes app is enough. Keep track of:

Who you talked to
The date of the call
What they told you
Any reference number they gave you
Bills, letters, and insurance papers

The goal is to keep everything in one place in case you need it later.

Know that an EOB is not a bill

An Explanation of Benefits (EOB) comes from your insurance company — it is not a bill. It shows what was billed, what your insurance paid, and what they say you may owe.

Compare the EOB with the bill from your doctor or hospital. If something looks wrong, ask questions before paying.
