Why this matters

The No Surprises Act protects you from most unexpected out-of-network bills. A little preparation up front makes it easier to push back if a bill looks wrong.

1.

Before your visit

Confirm if the facility is in-network
Ask if all providers involved are in-network
Request a Good Faith Estimate if uninsured or self-pay
Ask about any potential out-of-network charges
2.

During your visit

Review and understand any consent forms before signing
Ask questions if anything is unclear about billing
Keep copies of any documents you sign
3.

After your visit

Carefully review your medical bill
Compare the bill with your Explanation of Benefits (EOB)
Check for out-of-network charges
Ensure charges match your Good Faith Estimate
4.

If you receive a surprise bill

Contact your insurance company
Call the provider’s billing office
Request corrections if needed
File a dispute if the bill is $400+ over estimate
Submit a complaint if unresolved
